How it works
Online means anywhere, anytime – you choose
Courses are self-paced and provide you with all required information. Your course materials are available online 24/7, empowering you to develop a study pattern that works for you.
Studying with La Trobe Online offers you the flexibility of studying in your own time, at your own pace, wherever and whenever you like. We understand that life gets busy, which is why our courses allow you to fit study in around your other commitments, whether that be work, family or your social life. Your study timeline can be as unique as your lifestyle!
Courses designed for online delivery, taught with real-world experience
La Trobe Online courses and subjects are designed for online delivery. La Trobe Online learning designers and developers work in collaboration with our academic staff who supply subject matter from their knowledge and expertise and bring their real-world experience into the course design.
Online students’ learning outcomes are the same as those achieved through face-to-face study and the teaching staff who teach on-campus students teach online so you can get the same excellent outcomes. Whether you study online or face to face you get the same educational outcomes and your La Trobe degree.
How much time will you need?
While online study is more flexible, the total amount of time allocated for weekly study should be similar to what would be required in a conventional on-campus course. Some online subjects are taught in a condensed period and may require more study time each week. Online subjects include a range of learning activities:
- engaging with the online material
- participating in interactive classes
- completing the required readings
- note taking and completing assessments.
Self paced, individual learning along with some group work will give you the opportunity to gain a broad perspective.
As a guide we recommend that you commit at least 10-12 hours per week per online subject. As everyone processes information and learns differently, this may take you more or less time, so we recommend developing a study plan early to help you achieve your study goals.
Accessing your course materials
Your course and subject material will be available through the Learning Management System or LMS. The LMS will allow you to access your online subjects, calendar, forums, latest news and upcoming events, and provides a place where you can keep in touch with other students and our Academic team, who will be there to support you through your learning journey.
You'll also find the Discover La Trobe guide in the LMS, which will help you to become familiar with the tools, resources, and information you need to succeed.
We try to keep it simple; the major requirement is that you have internet access.
La Trobe Online aims to ensure that your subjects can be accessed from the LMS with any device you choose whether it be a computer, tablet or smartphone.
At La Trobe Online we want all our students to succeed and we know that sometimes you just need a bit of support to get you over the line.
As a La Trobe Online student, you will have access to a full support team that can help with any administrative or IT inquiries. The La Trobe Online team are available to help through a Zoom consult, phone or email.
